Overview: An upper-midscale hotel in “tony” Greenwich, CT
Strengths: Rooms, dining
Drawbacks: Slight housekeeping issue
Notable: This hotel has a certain “reputation”
Earlier this fall, I ended up taking a red-eye flight home from the west coast in order to be back in the office the next day for some important late morning-meetings. After a domestic red-eye, I usually budget to go home for a few hours to rest before going into the office.
This particular morning, however, was cleaners’ morning at our house. For about two hours, our house is overcome by cleaning machines, chatter and other noises – to the point where I can’t sleep through their work. I decided to book a room at the J House to crash for a few hours upon arrival before going in to the office.
I booked directly via the hotel’s website. I also called to advise them I’d be arriving the following morning, and asking them to not cancel my booking when the night audit is done. I was assured that the “following morning arrival” would be noted in the booking. Mindful that these comments often get overlooked in reservation files, I called from the airport shortly before departure to remind them. The gentlemen who fielded my call was indeed unaware of my arrival plans and went ahead and checked me in so that my booking wouldn’t auto-cancel. I find this second call (shortly before taking off) to be essential to protect bookings in these situations.
Upon arrival, the desk clerk had my key card ready and said they were expecting me. As I was already checked-in, the procedure took less than a minute.
This property is a former Howard Johnson’s and it was fully renovated and upgraded as part of a purchase by some locals. You wouldn’t know you were in a former HoJo.
The lobby of the hotel is crisp and clean. There is a local boutique coffee and chocolate shop off to the side.
My room was described on the website as a “courtyard view.” Though the room had the same name as my room at the Park Hyatt Aviara, this room just looked out on a small parking courtyard.
The room had a new and contemporary feel to it.
The bed was very comfortable and the windows nearly blacked out the daylight.
The art was suitable for Greenwich!
Power ports and AV connectivity were available.
The minibar was just a fridge, with a few complimentary waters.
The bathroom was enclosed only in glass – though largely smoked.
The only issue during my stay was that there were a prior guest’s hairs accumulated on the shower drain.
The hotel has a small gym (shown below) and an outdoor pool (not photographed).
All room rates include a continental breakfast. I’ve eaten here several times for dinner and found the food to be average for the area (though far better than a typical hotel restaurant, such was what you’d find at the nearby Hyatt). Whatever possible is made on-premises, and they have a small pastry kitchen (also encased in glass) off to the side of the bar and restaurant.
Check-out a few hours after arrival was uneventful. The hotel offers a house car for local drop offs and I had the driver take my to my office in town.
Though I wasn’t there for it this time, in the evening, the bar scene is quite lively. So much so that prospective guests should be aware that this hotel does have a bit of a reputation for locals. I understand some consider it to be an ideal spot to get away with someone other than your spouse. And, some have even said it is a spot to meet someone (other than your spouse) to get away with! These rumors are all unconfirmed, of course, and could be completely incorrect. 😉 Mindful of this, I made sure my wife knew I was staying here beforehand…lest she find a copy of the receipt in my files in the future and start asking questions!
Subject to the foregoing, I’d happily return to the J House should a I need a place in town. If you find yourself in Greenwich, CT, you should consider this property as a leading option in town.

Should you travels bring you to Greenwich, CT, other hotels you might consider include the Delamar (also with a certain “reputation”) and the Hyatt. For those interested, the Delamar’s house car is a Tesla Model S!
